Stop These Robocall Refund Scams Now

Expert Opinion
These calls are a textbook bait‑and‑switch scam, using a bogus IT‑department shutdown story to lure victims into returning a phantom $299 refund. The script is repetitive, vague, and never names a legitimate company, which is a red flag. Hang up immediately and do not call the number back—robocalls rarely provide a real callback line. Block the caller on your phone, report it to the FTC, and consider a call‑blocking app. If you’ve already given personal or financial info, monitor your accounts for unauthorized activity and alert your bank. Stay skeptical of unsolicited refund offers.

I have been targeted by a scam in which the company claims I am due for a refund, despite having no prior business with them, and I choose not to engage with such suspicious activities
Contrary to what might be expected, this scam does not involve checks. Instead, the scammers aim to either extract credit or debit card information or gain access to the victim's computer to steal data. If they succeed in accessing the bank account, they create a false deposit and then ask the victim to purchase gift cards to refund the supposed overpayment. Later, the bank reverses the false deposit, leaving the victim with financial losses and potential bank fees.
Beware of their tactics, they'll try to trick you into cashing a fake check and then demand money
