Recipients describe texts claiming their account is being registered on a new device, often followed by requests for money or gift‑card codes. The pattern matches a classic phishing campaign: attackers harvest phone numbers, trigger WhatsApp’s two‑factor prompts, and hope users will share the code. If you receive an unsolicited code, do not reply or click any links. Verify directly in the official WhatsApp app, report the number to your carrier, and consider blocking it. Staying skeptical and keeping your authentication methods private are the quickest ways to stay safe.
