Expert Opinion
Stay alert when anyone claims you’ll be served or sued over a debt you don’t recognize. Verify the caller’s identity by hanging up and calling the official agency directly; don’t rely on the number they provide. Keep records of the call, especially if they use rude language or pressure tactics. Report the incident to the FTC and your state’s consumer protection office. If you suspect a scam, block the number and consider filing a complaint with the FCC. Remember, legitimate debt collectors must provide written verification and cannot threaten you without proper documentation.
