Expert Opinion
Stay alert when a caller claims to book a hotel at a rock‑bottom rate and asks for immediate payment. These scams often masquerade as well‑known chains, then inflate the charge with hidden “tax” or “recovery” fees and disappear when you try to cancel. Keep a record of the exact website URL, email address, and any reference numbers; verify the reservation directly with the hotel before paying. If you suspect fraud, contact your credit‑card issuer right away and dispute the charge. Report the incident to consumer‑protection agencies and block the number to stop future calls.

After searching online for the Hyatt Place in Verona, Wisconsin, I inadvertently ended up booking through this number instead of directly with Hyatt. Unaware of the mix-up, I proceeded with the booking. Initially, the rate was listed as $137 per night, and the website indicated that it was cancellable. However, when I spoke with them, I was told that if I wanted the option to cancel, the rate would be $147 per night. The total for three nights came out to $620.17, which included $179.17 in extra fees. I decided to cancel and rebook directly with Hyatt, securing a rate of $115 per night. For three nights, the total was $388.13. Since I was booking two rooms, canceling and rebooking saved me a significant amount, $464.08.
