Following a call about a claim supposedly from my state, CO, I returned the call and spoke with a woman who already knew my name, phone number, and address, claiming a former employer from 13 years ago wanted to pay me, which raised my suspicions. After providing my email, I received a form with my name and initials pre-filled, another red flag. The form also mentioned a 30% fee once the payment was deposited into my bank account, yet another concern.

Expert Opinion
Watch for red flags when you get a call about unclaimed money or a forgotten claim. Scammers often use a heavy accent, vague reference to a deceased relative, and a “reference number” that’s hard to hear. They’ll claim to be from a company or investigation that can locate unclaimed money for a 30 % fee. Never share personal data, banking details, or confirm identities until you independently verify the organization on an official state website. Hang up if the script feels rehearsed, especially when the caller pressures you to act quickly. Document the call and report the number to your carrier or consumer‑protection agency.
