Utility outage scam calls—how to protect yourself!

Expert Opinion
Earlier today, a wave of calls from 844‑892‑5867 has been surfacing, many of which masquerade as local electric or water providers and threaten service disconnection unless a callback is made. These messages are a classic utility scam that often borrow the names of real companies like Avista or SMUD to add credibility. Never share personal or banking information, and don’t call the number back. If you suspect a legitimate outage, verify the claim through the official utility’s website or customer‑service line you already have on file. Report the number to your carrier and to the FTC to help curb future attacks.
