Expert Opinion
Verify the caller’s identity before you share any personal or financial details. Debt collector voicemails often cite overdue loans or legal threats to create urgency, so pause and look up the company online or call the official number listed on a bill. Never call back the number that left the message unless you’ve confirmed it’s legitimate; use a trusted source instead. If you suspect fraud, report the call to the FTC and your state’s consumer protection agency. Keep a log of the call time, content, and any numbers mentioned—this helps authorities investigate and protects you from future scams.
