Scam callers threaten lawsuits – what to do!

Expert Opinion
Picture getting a voicemail that claims you’re about to be served with a civil lawsuit and urges you to call back a toll‑free number. That scenario is classic for a scam that pretends to be a debt collector or legal mediator. The calls often spoof legitimate business names, use your maiden name, and play a fast‑talking script to create panic. Never share personal or financial details with an unknown caller, and verify any alleged debt through a written notice from the actual creditor. Block the offending number, report the incident to the FTC and your state attorney general, and consider filing a complaint with the FCC to help curb future robocalls. Stay vigilant and let legitimate agencies handle real legal matters.
