Expert Opinion

Oddly enough, the call script you heard sounds like a classic telemarketing pitch masquerading as a service provider. The caller introduced himself as Bongani and referenced Multichoice, a pattern often used to lend credibility. Always request a callback number, verify the employee’s identity on the official website, and never share personal or payment details during an unsolicited call. Clearly state that you do not give permission for further contact and ask to be placed on their internal do‑not‑call list. If calls persist, block the number on your handset and report the incident to the Information Regulator or your mobile provider. Keeping a log of call times and numbers can also help authorities track repeat offenders.

During the last few days I was bombarded with calls that I first ignored. I finally answered the final two, but heard nothing before they were cut off. On the third attempt, a caller mentioned my name and introduced himself as Bongani from a Multichoice‑related department. I told him he must obtain my consent before contacting me, refused to give permission, made it clear I avoid call centres, and ended the call. The other numbers used were 0822036526, 0822036645, 0822036820, 0872939095, 0872939097, 0872939097, 0822036526 and 0822036645. Call centres should request your permission before calling again; tell them they are not allowed. If they call once more, report them to the Information Regulator and know your rights.
