Why Unsolicited Energy Calls Are Risky
Summary — +441406328018
Expert Opinion
Reports highlight suspicious calls pretending to be from British Gas, often probing for homeowner status or bank details like sort codes. These interactions raise alarms, especially when callers push for personal info without prior verification or drop the pretence when challenged. Automated messages and silent calls add to the unease, suggesting persistent attempts to extract sensitive data. Hang up immediately if such queries arise, and never share financial details over unsolicited calls. Block the number and report to authorities like Action Fraud to help curb these nuisances. Verify any legitimate contact directly through official channels to stay safe.

The caller, a woman with a strong, unfamiliar accent, claimed to be from British Gas and mentioned details of my contract, but she immediately asked if I owned the house – a red flag, since British Gas normally uses your name. She then talked about new benefits, a helpline, and a door visit within 48 hours, which sounded dodgy, and finally demanded my sort code, another warning sign. I refused and suspect it was a scam.
A woman introduced herself as a British Gas representative and asked if I owned the property, mentioning boiler cover. I told her it was a scam and she hung up without denying it.

At 12:04 pm the phone rang, I answered but stayed silent for about 16 seconds; there was no background noise, so I hung up and blocked the number.
An automated voice recorded on my voicemail asked me to call them back – not happening.
A call came through without any message left – in today’s climate of scams, that feels like harassment.
