Someone rang asking for my electricity meter reading. When I asked why, they claimed to be my supplier, guessed the wrong provider, and then hung up – obvious scam.
Persistent Call Scammers?
Summary — +442081445053
Expert Opinion
What drives callers to impersonate energy firms so boldly? These reports reveal a pattern of scammers posing as suppliers like Octopus Energy, British Gas, or National Grid, demanding meter readings under false pretences of faults or upgrades. Interactions often turn abusive, with persistent ringing—even 22 times in 15 minutes—or crude remarks when challenged. One bizarre case involved a man declaring love, adding a harassing twist. Register with TPS immediately to curb unsolicited calls legally, and always verify with your actual supplier via official channels. Never share readings or personal details over unsolicited calls; hang up and report to Action Fraud. Blocking helps, but persistence suggests spoofing—consider apps for advanced filtering. Stay vigilant to avoid data theft or financial harm.

A bloke who’d called me months ago phoned again, professing love and wanting to make me smile – I reported him to police after four calls in 24 hrs, seriously.
Received a call yesterday saying my meter was broken and needed replacement plus a new account, promising cheaper rates without specifics – turned out my supplier says the meter’s fine, so it was a scam, lol.
The call was clearly fraudulent.
My business line was dialled 22 times in just 15 minutes by 02081445053. Each time I hung up, the call returned, and I couldn’t block the number. After finally telling the caller to go away and hanging up again, I managed to block it.
We quickly spotted the scam when the bloke asked for our meter reading and then tried to get my personal number for a private chat, even asking if I'd do him a favour. I told him no, mate.
Avoid chatting with these scammers. Register your number on the TPS (Telephone Preference Service) to cut down illegal cold calls and report any offenders, it's a doddle, cheers.
A nuisance utility spam call.
They pretended to be Octopus Energy, wanted a meter reading, and after I gave the MPAN they said the reading was too high and a fault existed – then they tried to lock in a new meter over a recorded call, which tipped me off as a scam, no way.
They claimed to be from National Grid wanting my meter reading; I told them to contact my supplier. They said the reading was approximate and needed checking, but I already send monthly photos, so they just hung up on me, mate.
They said they were from Scottish Power needing a meter reading because my meter showed unusually high usage. I told them I don’t have a smart meter, yet they insisted it was a malfunctioning smart meter. When I repeated that I’m submitting readings online, they claimed the online figures were abnormally high and insisted on a physical reading. Now I’m receiving at least two calls from them each day.
They claimed they'd swap my gas meter for a smart one, saying British Gas only handles such changes on weekdays – obvious weekend excuse and a classic scam move, lol.
Looks like a rip-off – the caller pretended to be British Gas and wanted info sent via WhatsApp, yeah.
