HMRC tax scam – how to protect yourself!

Expert Opinion
Check the caller ID carefully before you answer any call from an unknown number. Most reports describe a robotic voice claiming to be HMRC or a mobile operator and demanding payment or personal details. Never share your National Insurance number, bank information or passwords in response to a press‑1 prompt. If the call mentions tax investigations, court action or a warrant, treat it as a red flag – genuine HMRC contacts always follow up in writing. Hang up, block the number and report the incident to Action Fraud or the official HMRC fraud hotline. Stay sceptical and protect your data.
