Expert Opinion

Calls purporting to be NBN technicians flood the line, promising speed upgrades or free replacements while demanding personal details. Most callers use generic scripts, Indian accents and vague job IDs to appear legitimate, then ask for your internet speed, device count, or credit‑card information. Never share passwords, credit‑card numbers or even your full address with unsolicited callers. Hang up immediately and verify any supposed upgrade by dialing the official NBN contact number from your bill or provider website. Block the number on your phone and report the incident to the ACCC or your telecom provider to help curb the scam wave.

A call began with a woman, followed by a man, both speaking with Southeast Asian accents. Lacking caller ID on my landline, I was contacted about a supposed NBN upgrade. The woman displayed poor knowledge of ADSL, copper lines, and FTTH, and the man grew upset when I pointed out that fiber service is unlikely in my remote area.

611800687626 Scam NBN Swindlers

A NBN swindler used the classic line about upgrading copper to fibre, catching me after a few tries. They mentioned names like Shane and Mark Watson, asked for my mobile for the tech’s visit on Friday, and then transferred me to a senior rep who rattled off nonsense, demanding a debit/credit card for a registration fee. I refused, they got heated, threatened a $400 reconnection fee, and I hung up. Crazy stuff, man.

He called again from 0011668502514 (maybe a digit off), booked the slot, listed me as the contact and then asked for my mobile. I told him NBN already has it and I won’t hand it over. He tried to get just the last four digits, I shot back that if he doesn’t have my number what’s the point of the last four, and even said “you should be giving me the last four if you have my number.” He hung up—wild.
