Is the mysterious charity call legit or a prank?

Expert Opinion
Recent patterns show a mix of legitimate nonprofit outreach and silent nuisance calls from this line. Callers often claim affiliation with animal charities like WWF or SPCA, directing recipients to websites such as www.wwf.org.nz. However, the frequent silent rings and abrupt hang‑ups are hallmark signs of a prank or harassment tactic. If you receive a call, let it go to voicemail and verify the organization independently before returning the call. Block the number if the behavior repeats, and consider reporting persistent silent calls to your carrier. Staying cautious protects your privacy and reduces annoyance.

Another silent call; I was left staring at my phone wondering who dialed.
After returning the call, a voicemail message directed me to the Charify Organisation's website, www.wwf.org.nz, but it remains unclear how they obtained my private work number.
Initially, they requested to speak with me, but after I confirmed, they remained silent; subsequent calls featured heavy breathing and coughing, suggesting a young male is on the other end
I can confirm that this number is related to SPCA NZ, they use a third-party call centre to update sponsors and handle other tasks
Despite my efforts to answer, they consistently hang up or ring for only a few seconds, so i have stoped answering this number.
Waikato Westpac Rescue called, seemed legitimate but I wasn't sure what they needed.
