Australia: what to expect from calls
Unsure about an Australian number? Find fresh community reports to judge unknown calls or texts. Cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide show both legitimate callbacks (delivery, banking, appointments) and waves of phishing. Area codes (02, 03, 07, 08) are not reliable for location due to portability/VoIP — treat them as signal, not proof.
Good practice: return calls only via the official number on the provider’s site/app, check in‑app messages, and don’t share one‑time codes by phone. Enable device blocks and carrier filters (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone) and leave a short, factual experience here to help others.
When I answered the call there was silence; calling back led to a “trying to connect you” message, so I hung up instantly.
Whenever we block a number, a new variant calls daily; Do Not Register hasn't helped. Considering ditching our landline.
Calls arrive at least once daily and then drop. How can I stop this nuisance?
The phone rang obnoxiously before the line dropped.
Caller claimed affiliation with government solar rebates (Indian accent) and was cut off immediately; aligns with numerous other reports.
Two calls came in today (23/03) and both were dropped.
A weekend call came through without a message; later similar numbers 02 8551 4258 and 02 8551 4264 called back.

Received this number in a laser hair removal promo; it's the one you text 'stop' to.
At my age, I’m not quick to answer the phone, and even the nurse has stopped trying. She believes it’s likely a scammer targeting valid numbers, then following up with texts about parking fines or a daughter needing money. I found the parking fine scenario amusing because all my transfers end up in an ambulance.
The call pretended to be friendly from an energy firm; when I said I wasn't interested and was tired of such calls, the caller hung up. Very rude!
Missed call ignored until I returned it; it was from the Wine Company, and after two years of telling them I don’t drink, I blocked them, yet they keep switching numbers.
Called at 6:07 pm, which was quite a nuisance.
No voicemail left; when I redialed, Optus said the number isn’t active.

FAQ — Australia
How do I verify callers in Australia?
Call back via the official company number (website/app), not the unknown number. Check in‑app notices.
What patterns are common?
Delivery/appointment confirmations, bank callbacks, 2FA codes; periodic robocalls, smishing around parcels, and fake support hotlines.
Are area codes reliable?
Not really. Portability and VoIP make 02/03/07/08 weak as location hints. Context and content matter more.
What makes a helpful report?
Be concise: caller type, purpose, date and cues. Avoid sensitive data.
