UK numbers: context and signals
Unsure about a UK caller? Find fresh community reports to judge unknown calls or texts. In London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh or Glasgow you’ll see legitimate callbacks (banks, clinics, deliveries) alongside waves of automated or misleading contacts. Area codes like 020, 0161, 0121, 0131 are not reliable for location due to portability/VoIP — use them as context, not proof.
What to do: if unsure, return calls via the official number on the company site/app, check in‑app notices, and don’t share one‑time codes. Use device filters/blocks and, if available, carrier tools (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three). Share a short factual note here so others can decide faster.
Just a junk call.
Sales call from Kelly.
Potential Visa fraud.
Seriously fed up with these calls, mate.
Beware of a housing repair scam, yeah.
Unsolicited request to add my number on WhatsApp from an unknown source.
Note: returning calls to unknown numbers is risky. Scammers often use thousands of autogenerated UK landline and mobile numbers from abroad, especially India. A callback usually leads to a dead‑end message, but can also charge you heavily and flag your number as a target for further scams. Occasionally the number belongs to an innocent party, causing annoyance and potential spam reports. Legitimate calls are rare.
When I answered, there was nobody on the line.
This appears to be a scam.
A typical scam call.
I received two missed calls, but no voicemail was left.
A loud call‑centre background was audible, and the caller hung up when I asked for identification; O2 flagged the number as suspected spam.
A caller identifying herself as Jenny from Virgin Media Technical asked if I had internet issues, then hung up when I inquired about the problem – definitely seemed fraudulent.
They called out of the blue and cut the line as soon as I stayed silent.
A fraudulent offer for television equipment insurance.
The call turned out to be a fraud; a woman with an East‑Asian accent claimed my Sky service was about to end, which is nonsense as I never subscribed to Sky.
Even though the number is TSP‑registered, I still receive scam calls that never leave a voicemail. Stay wary of these fraudsters.
A man calling himself Sam claimed to work for a TV maintenance firm linked to BT, Virgin and Sky, asking about TV or broadband problems. When I said I'd contact my provider, he stammered and, after insisting he represented those companies, guessed my landline provider incorrectly and then slammed the phone.
I got a dubious text saying I owed a parking charge, with a link to enter my registration, but it gave no details of where or when the alleged offence happened.
