UK numbers: context and signals
Unsure about a UK caller? Find fresh community reports to judge unknown calls or texts. In London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh or Glasgow you’ll see legitimate callbacks (banks, clinics, deliveries) alongside waves of automated or misleading contacts. Area codes like 020, 0161, 0121, 0131 are not reliable for location due to portability/VoIP — use them as context, not proof.
What to do: if unsure, return calls via the official number on the company site/app, check in‑app notices, and don’t share one‑time codes. Use device filters/blocks and, if available, carrier tools (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three). Share a short factual note here so others can decide faster.

Encountered odd conduct on a dating app – only texts, no calls
A coworker
It rings, I pick up, but there's nobody on the line, with several calls overlapping.
A male voice with a foreign accent claimed to represent the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and asked me to confirm my name and whether I’d paid the phone bill. I always refuse to verify anything, even if they state your name, and I demand they identify themselves first. He said he was from TPS, then inquired if I was responsible for the line, and later asked if my credit card would expire in 2025. I hung up. TPS operates only in the UK, doesn’t ask about credit cards, and doesn’t cover foreign numbers, so this was a scam.
A silent call that raised phishing suspicions.
I set my voicemail to block unknown callers – saves me a lot of hassle, yeah.
