Spoofed debt‑collector call? How to protect yourself
Summary — +15402026863
Expert Opinion
Watch out: calls from +1‑540‑202‑6863 show classic signs of a spoofing debt‑collection scam. Callers usually greet you with a recorded hold message, then demand personal info like your birthdate or Social Security digits before revealing any account details. Never provide that information, and avoid calling the number back—robocallers often use the same ID to lure victims. Use your phone’s built‑in scam‑likely filter, add the number to a block list, and consider a carrier‑level stop‑spam service. Report the nuisance to the FTC’s Do Not Call Registry and keep a log of timestamps in case you need to dispute a false claim.

On November 22, 2021, I received a call from a different number, 540 202 6863, at 8:15 a.m., and when I answered, I was asked to hold, after which I hung up.
When I returned the call, I was asked for personal details by a representative claiming to be from Nationwide collections, but I refused to provide them without more information.
Given the likelihood of this number being spoofed and the absence of a message, it's reasonable to assume the call is not important, and blocking the number could prevent further unnecessary calls.
Despite frequent calls, the identity of the caller remains unknown. No messages or responses are provided, even when the call is answered.
