Following an unauthorized attempt to register my number on WhatsApp, I received a verification code via SMS in German. According to WhatsApp's guidelines, such messages should be ignored if they were not requested, which is exactly what I did. Shortly thereafter, I received a call from this number, which I did not answer, and based on previous comments, it appears to be a scammer impersonating WhatsApp in an attempt to obtain the verification code sent via SMS and gain control of my WhatsApp account. A Google search for "scam calls from the UK" yields relevant information.
