Expert Opinion
Recent reports highlight a surge in bogus warranty calls targeting washing‑machine owners. Callers pretend to offer extensions for popular makes such as Hotpoint, then pressure you for personal or banking details. The safest move is to hang up immediately – never confirm a make you don’t own and never share financial information. Use your provider’s call‑blocking service or a third‑party app, and add the number to a personal block list. Report persistent offenders to Action Fraud and, where possible, to your phone network’s scam‑filter team. Keep a log of dates and any script snippets; this helps authorities track organised scams.

After a long pause following my answer, they mentioned a warranty for my washing machine. When I asked which one, they said "your Hotpoint"—a brand I’ve never owned. I demanded they stop calling and remove my number from their cold-calling list.
