Chinese Embassy scam calls – how to protect yourself!

Expert Opinion
Imagine receiving a Mandarin‑spoken message claiming you have urgent documents at the Chinese Embassy. Most reports flag the number as a scam, with callers impersonating officials to harvest personal details. Avoid answering unknown numbers that display a foreign embassy name, and never disclose passport numbers, credit‑card data or any personal information. If a voicemail references legal trouble or financial crime, treat it as suspicious and block the caller. Report the number to your mobile provider and, where appropriate, to Action Fraud. Consider registering your contact details with the Telephone Preference Service to reduce unsolicited calls, and always verify any embassy contact through the official website before taking action.

The caller knew my name but mispronounced it, spoke only in Chinese, and falsely claimed to be from the Chinese embassy—a clear scam.
Scam from China
This is a scam, and the perpetrator's actions are utterly reprehensible.
A fraudulent call allegedly from the Chinese Embassy claimed I had a document from the Pudong Public Security Bureau and needed to visit the embassy in person; this is a scam.
Endless unwanted calls
This appears to be a scam targeting the Chinese community.
They struggled to pronounce my name correctly as they read it from pinyin. A document supposedly sent by the Chinese police was mentioned, claiming that a financial criminal had used my name to register a bank card, urging me to visit the Chinese embassy for clarification. When I inquired about the embassy's postcode, they didn’t even understand the term 'postcode'. Their command of English is quite poor. Interestingly, the registration date for this alleged bank card varied between the two callers. I found their attempts amusing and subsequently blocked them.

Definitely a scammer.
Scam, but stupid and somehow entertaining. The man claimed to be a worker in Chinese Embassy in London but even can't say his department's name right. He acted cool but doesn't even know the very basics. He even said he has a job for Shanghai police. WTF man? Since when China has a CIA system and policing in the UK? Where did he learn this joke, a movie or something?
