Telemarketing from AO: how to protect your data!

I got a call yesterday after purchasing a TV from AO – it was a missed call. They called again today, and my phone flagged it as a potential scam. When I answered, the caller claimed to be from AO conducting final delivery checks and requested my details. I refused, citing the scam warning. They insisted it wasn’t a scam and promised to call back. I mentioned I already had email and text confirmations of the delivery and asked whether not responding would delay it. They said no, then hung up, leading me to believe it was an insurance scam, as with other reports about this number.

Just like the rest, after ordering from AO I spotted a blocked call, looked it up and it felt sketchy, so I blocked it – thanks, phone, for the solid service, cheers.

A man rang offering insurance for a recent white‑goods delivery and immediately began probing data‑protection questions. It was an obvious scam; he must have obtained my number from the supplier. This is AO, and as other users have mentioned, it’s primarily an attempt to sell you additional services. The call had a distinctly 'scammy' feel. The woman on the line requested my address, and when I asked for some verification to confirm the legitimacy of the call, she responded with questions about my recent purchases. I insisted on my order number, but she couldn't provide it and stated she would need my address to continue, or otherwise, she would have to email me. I told her to proceed with the email! She suggested the call was to verify delivery details and insurance, but it was just a blatant upsell, which was confirmed by the email received shortly after. I found the method quite misleading.

A bloke pretended to be from AO, offering a cheap care package for the appliance I bought last night – he even knew my name and delivery date, which is proper unsettling. The first ring was from a Cardiff code, then a Manchester one popped up straight after I hung up. I’ve seen the same with Argos lately, so it feels like these big firms aren’t sorting it out, or maybe they’re selling our data, mate.

The caller introduced himself as Callum from ao, requested my post code and address details, which I provided before the line went dead.
