Eleanor's council tax scam
Shore Claims scam: how to protect elderly relatives!
Summary — +443003034570
Expert Opinion
Like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, the call from Shore Claims pretends to be a council aide. In practice it targets older adults with a promise of a council‑tax refund, then demands an upfront admin fee and often extracts bank details before any verification. The safest route is to refuse any payment or personal data until you can confirm the firm’s legitimacy on the official council website or via a known phone number. Hang up if the caller pressures you, add the number to your do‑not‑call list, and report the incident to Action Fraud or your local trading standards office. Keeping a written record of the call can also help authorities track repeat offenders.

In May, I was deceived into paying £65 for a council tax review; despite initial convincing interactions with representatives, the outcome was unsuccessful, and I am now taking action with Trading Standards to report this scam
Eleanor from Shaw Claims contacted my 87-year-old, claiming she was in the wrong council tax bracket and offering a refund from 1993 for an £80 fee. Red flags: 1. A stranger calls without knowing your name or address. 2. No guarantee of service. 3. Unclear how they know about overpayments. 4. Payment requested over the phone. Some say it's legal, but it's not. They won't contact your council. Ask them to remove your number and sue if they call again. It's a scam.
This company has been conning my elderly grandmother for month's, selling her product's and sharing her detail's with other company's, she's lost hundred's of pound's, just hang up on them
After recieving a call from this company, I read the reviews and was worried, but then I spoke to a lady called Charlotte, who explained the process and I recieved my paperwork, I dont think they are a scam, they have been helpfull from the start
Received a call from someone named Donna claiming to be about council readings, but the council has no record of it.
Fortunately, my husband was cautious when 'Donna' rang while I was out, and he requested more information via email before divulging our bank details. Upon my return, I reminded him that we had already re-banded ourselves and that the experiences shared here confirm it's a free and straightforward process. Although the email from 'Donna' appeared legitimate, it's ultimately a scam targeting elderly individuals through questionable means, as evidenced by the fact that we're ex-directory and registered with the telephone preference scheme. As a result, we've had to block both the email and phone number, which is quite frustrating.
Official warnings from the police advise against engaging with this company, and it is recommended to avoid them entirely
From a technical standpoint, as an employee of the local district council tax department, I can confirm that what this company is doing is technically legal, albeit with no guarantee of a successful property banding change, and homeowners can request this change themselves at no cost
I believe it's unjust to label this company a scam based on my interaction. A representative provided helpful information regarding council tax, and although I'm awaiting a refund, the service was supportive, offering contact details and an address.
