Openreach appointment texts – real or spoof?

Expert Opinion
Picture this: a text arrives claiming to be from Openreach, urging you to confirm a fibre broadband appointment. The message includes accurate details such as your postcode and scheduled slot, which can make it feel genuine. However, scammers often spoof numbers to harvest personal data or push unwanted upgrades. Always verify by contacting your provider through an official channel before replying or clicking any links. Keep records of the date, time and provider mentioned, and compare them with any recent service orders you have. If the request seems odd, ignore it or forward the SMS to the provider’s support line. Staying cautious reduces the risk of spoofing and unwanted charges.

+447786202608 initially sent a text to my old mobile: "Hi, it’s Openreach on behalf of TalkTalk. We’re excited to activate your new service on 16 Aug at a postcode ending ###OLP. You won’t need to be in. Just plug in and power up your router on activation day before 8 am to enable service activation. The router comes with instructions, but for more help, visit [#]vineo[###]/43365733." I haven’t received a new router or any email about it.
I received a text from 07786202608, and upon checking, it’s listed on the Openreach site as an engineer contact number.
My area was upgraded to fibre-optic with engineers laying purple cables. TalkTalk provided a new router and a letter. I received 2 texts purportedly from Openreach, showing my postcode's last three digits, asking to leave the new router on for a specific date. The first text included a link to an Openreach Vimeo video. The second asked me to respond with 'ready' for an engineer to test my service. I didn't respond, but kept the router on for that date...
The only suspicious aspect was the request to text back, which could potentially lead to junk mail; however, my internet speed has increased since, reaching 3MB/sec from 1MB/sec, but caution is still advised when sharing personal or financial information.
Many probably aren’t aware of broadband upgrades in their area. The Openreach text, mentioning ‘on behalf of TalkTalk’, likely sourced my email. Both companies should’ve combined their communications instead of sending separate letters and texts. TalkTalk mentioned a new router but provided no specifics on fibre or speeds, nor did they mention Openreach.
