Expert Opinion
Like a persistent doorbell that never stops ringing, these automated debt‑scam calls can wear anyone down. Most callers use a pre‑recorded script that mentions large debts and a bogus government grant, hoping to lure you into pressing a key or sharing personal details. The safest move is to let the call go to voicemail, never press any numbers, and block the number straight away. Register the caller on the TPS list, use your handset’s built‑in call‑blocking features, and consider a third‑party app for extra protection. If you suspect fraud, report it to Action Fraud and your mobile provider – early action can stop the nuisance before it spreads.

An automated voice inquired about having £6,000 in debt
It appears to be a scam as the automated call claimed I could receive a government grant to pay off debts of over £6000 by paying £80 monthly, but failed to provide essential details such as the duration of payments or the recipient, and instead prompted me to press option 2 to proceed or 9 to cancel, likely attempting to elicit more information and gain access to my bank account
An automated message claimed that if I have debts exceeding £6000, I could qualify for a government grant to assist with repayments of £80 monthly, without specifying the duration or the recipient. Clearly fishing for personal details and bank access.
