Xcel Energy Scam Call? How to Protect Yourself!
Summary — +16124817034
Expert Opinion
Never trust a sudden urgent call about service disconnection. Scammers often masquerade as utility companies like Xcel Energy, using pressure tactics and recorded messages that demand you press 1 to speak with “customer service.” Verify any claim by hanging up and calling the official number listed on your bill before sharing personal information. Block the offending number on your phone and report the incident to the FTC or your state consumer protection agency. Keep an eye on your account for unexpected charges, and educate family members—especially seniors—about these common tricks. Staying calm and double‑checking information are your best defenses against these scams.

An automated message was received, claiming that a bill was overdue and would be cut off within two hours, requesting to press 1 to be connected, but the explanation provided about the ACH upgrade seemed dubious, especially considering the current shelter-in-place guidelines.
This is a scam: a recorded message purportedly from Xcel Energy threatened to disconnect our service and prompted me to press 1 to reach customer service. After being connected to a live person who couldn't provide a valid reason for the call, they hung up when questioned further.
At 4 am, the caller hung up immediately.
