Expert Opinion
Imagine a recorded voice threatening legal action over a vague debt, yet never revealing a company name—that’s the hallmark of a classic scam. Callers often cite a settlement amount like $187 or $189 and pressure you with urgency, but legitimate collectors must be licensed and provide clear identification. Hang up, block the number, and never share personal or banking details. Verify any debt through a written notice and check the caller’s license on your state’s regulator site. Report the call to the FTC and your state attorney general. Keep records of the call, and consider a call‑filtering app to reduce future harassment.

Scammers prefer not to communicate via mail, as they have no legitimate information to send
Upon answering, a recording instructed me to call back, and upon doing so, the representative failed to identify themselves or their purpose, instead offering a deal to pay $187, allegedly a reduction from a higher original amount, which I declined due to my protected income status, leading to a threat of increased interest rates and an abrupt hang-up.

I received the same call, which is a significant scam. I advise against answering and instead recommend reporting it to the relevant authorities, including television stations, the FTC, AARP, and local law enforcement. These scammers are lazy and inept.
