The caller, who went by the name Bo Martin but likely uses various aliases and has a heavy Indian accent, harassed and threatened me, stating that if I didn't pay $5000, I would face jail time. They advised against seeking legal representation and claimed to be from the Bureau of Criminal Investigations, yet failed to provide any requested information and continuously interrupted my attempts to speak. After filing a police report and contacting the FTC and credit bureaus, I have taken steps to block further communication.

Reports from the FBI, FTC, and state AGs indicate that fake payday loan sites have been set up, and information is being obtained from various sources, including large ID breaches, which is how they got my info, so it's essential to know your rights.
Research indicates this scam is international, with the FBI receiving complaints since before 2006, and it involves legitimate payday loan companies' call centers in India being compromised.
It's astonishing to see the extent to which these scammers will go to extort money from innocent people, as evidenced by my own experience and the numerous posts here.

I had a similar experience with a company called Marcello & Camarillo, which claimed to be a mediation service; they used intimidation tactics, mentioning the DA's office, court filings, and fraud, and demanded payment by debit or credit card, but when I asked for the name of the payday loan company they were supposedly representing, they were unable to provide it; the number that appeared on my caller ID was either 1-800-642-1084 or Restricted, and the person I spoke with claimed to be Owen Shore
Joshua Black contacted me a couple of weeks ago and again today, claiming I had an outstanding loan, but after verifying the information with my bank and the loan company, I confirmed that the loan had been paid off and informed him that I would not be sending any money.
